Walter C. Nelson ATTENTION: Ex-prisoners of War Legionnaires Are you aware of the lifetime entitlements to
pension and health benefits for you and your spouse due to PRESUMPTIVE SERVICE-CONNECTED
DISABILITIES that Congress granted all American ex-prisoners of war? The VA reports that as of January 1, 2002,
82,427 (66%)
POWs out of the original total of 125,208 surviving captivity are now deceased.
Of the 42,781 surviving ex-prisoners of war the VA estimates that approximately
30,000 are not receiving the entitlements Congress has granted. For those who are computer literate, go to www.va.gov/pressrel/98spow.htm
where you will read about: VA BENEFITS FOR FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR "Former
American POWs are eligible for special veterans benefits, including medical care
in VA hospitals and disability compensation for injuries and disease presumed to
be caused by internment. These benefits are in addition to regular veterans
benefits and services to which they, as veterans, are entitled." If you
are an American ex-prisoner of war from any war holding an honorable discharge
and are not now rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Administration, do yourself
and your family the service of contacting one of the Florida offers or chapter
commanders of the American Ex-Prisoners of War organization. They will put you
in touch with a service officer who is specially trailed to process the claims
of ex-prisoners of war. Call The American Legion Department of Florida for the
number of the Chapter nearest you.
